Being born and bred in the Clare Valley, Nev has a particular soft spot for the region – and unashamedly so.
That “local knowledge” has its distinct advantages when it comes to traversing the many windy backroads that are part of the region’s mystique and magic.
For one, the meandering roads are home to some of the award-winning wineries the area is renowned for – and also home to some of the lesser known yet emerging small wineries whose wines are a knockout.
The township of Clare is located about 120 kilometres from Adelaide – or about a two-hour drive from Adelaide.
Like the Barossa Valley just down the road a bit, the Clare Valley is perfect for people seeking a day trip wine tour but also offers ample of different wine-tasting options for those wishing to stay longer.
The broader Clare Valley district is home to more than 30 wineries, most of which are small, family-owned and operated businesses.
As such, it’s not unusual to see various family members – Mum, Dad, Grandpa, Son, Wife, etc – behind the counter offering wine tasting experiences to customers who visit.
Widely regarded as the home of Australian riesling, the Valley is also one of the country’s oldest – and most successful – wine-producing areas, with a winemaking dating back 160 years.
A “must see” while experiencing the Clare Valley is the region’s oldest winery, Sevenhill Cellars, established by Jesuits in 1851.
“My family has a long and proud association with the Clare Valley – maybe not as long as the Jesuits – so it will always hold special meaning to me,” Nev joked.
“It’s where I was born and lived my formative years – many of my family members still live there – so to see the region grow over the years to what it has become today makes me extremely proud,” he said.
“To me, what sets the Clare Valley apart from the other wine regions in SA are the winding roads that crisscross the region – and along almost every one of those roads is a unique wine-tasting experience.”
All tastings must be pre booked and during tastings people must be seated and follow the winery’s Covid-19 safety plan.
